Summary
The Family Services Assistant is responsible for providing counseling, support, and social services to program recipients. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy.
Typical Functions
Interviews client and family members to determine client's needs, problems, and social services required, visits the client's home to verify data collected or observe and assess client's social environment. Reviews all background information, develops a service plan, and refers client to service providers, including making changes as needed, making appointments for abuse examinations, and ensuring service applications are complete. Participates in the development and review of individualized client programs and documents the client's program progress by memos, case notes, forms, and letters. Monitors scheduling of comprehensive health assessments, notifies all parties, and assists caseworkers with completion of medical recommendations as needed. Counsels client in behavioral, bereavement, stress, and/or personal matters and assists client with personal services by helping them respond to personal and official correspondence and business. Visits alternate resources, such as workshops, daycare facilities and special programs to determine usefulness to the client's progress and meets with local school officials to determine if client can be placed in special education classes and determines which facility would best fit the client's needs. Establishes and maintains contact with clients' families to provide information and referral to other sources when requested. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of counseling and social work. Ability to prepare, present, and review oral and written information and detailed reports. Ability to interview, obtain, evaluate, and provide information relating to the problems and services needed. Ability to provide support, guidance, and counseling to clients. Ability to develop and monitor the effectiveness of programs and services for clients. Ability to investigate and secure information pertaining to client abuse.
Minimum Education and/or Experience
The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma; plus four years of experience in general office work or documents or claims examination in a social service program setting or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
